BOSTON – The Massachusetts House of Representatives adopted an amendment to the FY07 budget sponsored by Representatives Ruth B. Balser (D-Newton), Lida Harkins (D-Needham), and Alice Peisch (D-Wellesley) that appropriates $250,000 for improvement to the rails on Echo Bridge. Echo Bridge, which spans the Charles River at Hemlock Gorge, was going to be closed until an agreement was reached with the MWRA to construct a temporary wooden fence. The funds that were earmarked in the House budget would go towards a permanent restoration of the historic rails, preserving this beautiful landmark for use by residents of Newton and the surrounding communities. Representative Balser commented, “I am delighted that we were successful in persuading the House of the value of preserving access to this jewel in Newton.” Additionally, the House adopted an amendment filed by Representative Balser, and co-sponsored by Representatives Kay Khan (D-Newton), and Peter Koutoujian (D-Watertown), that provides $40,000 to the City of Newton to assist in its study of the redevelopment of Newton Center. The study will consider traffic patterns, housing, commerce and other issues vital to the surrounding community. Representative Balser stated, “The State is committed to smart-growth. These funds will assist the people of Newton in deciding how to approach change to Newton Center.” ### |
