Representative Ruth B. Balser and Senator Cynthia Stone Creem announce Appropriation for Historic Echo Bridge

BOSTONThe Massachusetts legislature has approved the FY’07 budget including a provision that appropriates $250,000 for improvement to the rails on Echo Bridge according to Representatives Ruth B. Balser (D-Newton) and Senator Cynthia Stone Creem.

Echo Bridge, which spans the Charles River at Hemlock Gorge, was going to be closed until an agreement was reached with the MWRA to construct a temporary wooden fence.  The funds that were earmarked in the budget would go towards a permanent restoration of the historic rails, preserving this beautiful landmark for use by residents of Newton and the surrounding communities.

Representative Balser commented, “I am thrilled that the Legislature has supported our efforts to restore Echo Bridge so it can be enjoyed by residents of Newton, Needham, and Wellesley for years to come.”

“Echo Bridge is an important resource to the communities of Newton, Needham and Wellesley which provides access to pedestrians between Needham and Newton while simultaneously providing a beautiful view of Hemlock Gorge,” said Senator Creem.  “Now we will be able to make the necessary improvements ensuring the safety of all pedestrians who cross it.”
